The Sullivan Middle School Junior FFA Soil Judging Team of  Brynn Pershing, Gretchen Swick, Isabelle Norris and Corbyn Irwin earned 8th place in the junior division at the State Soils competition in Adams County on Saturday, October 19. Earlier this month, at the area competition, the SMS Junior FFA Soil Judging Team placed 1st in the junior division at the Area Competition, which advanced them to the state competition.

Students spent all day Friday, October 18, traveling around the county examining practice soil pits in order to evaluate the soil types in that part of the state. Approximately 375 students from across the state participated in the competition in all divisions combined, including junior, senior, master divisions.

Kevin Cross, SWSC agriculture instructor and FFA advisor said, "The students did a great job, and learned a lot. This was their first soils contest in Northern Indiana, which contains soils mostly of glacial origin. They had the opportunity to see the types of soil that they have never seen before, and learned that the high clay content of soils in that part of the state is due to that area being an ancient drainage basin of what is now Lake Erie. It was a great opportunity, and the students are ready to compete again next year!"
