Education and Background: Art teacher Stephanie Wilhelm graduated from Terre Haute South in 2004. Following high school, she continued her education at Indiana State University, and earned a bachelor’s degree in art education in 2009. She joined Southwest School Corporation in 2015 and for the past five years, she has taught art at Sullivan Middle School and Carlisle Middle School. Mrs. Wilhelm is married to Steve and has one son, Lukas, who attends Kindergarten at Carlisle Elementary.

Why she enjoys teaching: “Art has always been a part of my life…I spent my childhood in art studios and galleries,” she said. “Sometimes instead of bedtime stories I was read art history books. I feel like this is what I was born to do and love something about it every day!”

She added, “Since I teach such a wide age range of kids, I literally get to watch them grow into young adults who have strong opinions and ideas. I am lucky enough to be able to help them learn to appreciate the world around them and experience art and cultures they may not otherwise be exposed to.”

Her favorite teaching moments: “My favorite teaching moments are those where a student who may struggle in other academic areas excels in my class and finds confidence in their work,” she said.

How she spends her free time: “I enjoy spending time with my family and creating my own art,” said Mrs. Wilhelm. “I currently make and sell jewelry made from recycled materials. I also recently rediscovered my love of ceramics and am currently in the process of putting together a ceramic studio with my mother, who also teaches art at the college level.”
